BADASS BADLAND BITCHES !

Wow!

So, I'm a month behind on posting. It's not your fault, I promise! ;)

It's just a testament to the fun and busy schedules we live.

Ok, so we got the hell out of dodge (OKC) in July to have a wonderful Independence Day adventure in South Dakota outlaw country!

The drive through Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota was vast and glorious! We were definitely in the Great Plains! Corn galore!

We rolled into town (Custer,SD) and immediately felt at home in our wonderful Hotel "The Bavarian Inn". Two Pools, Tennis Court, Walking Trail, Game Room and a Hot Tub we used every day!

The following days we let the roads of adventure take us where it pleased. There is so much Western and "Outlaw" history, in these parts of the country, that there is something to see at every turn. We took beautiful scenic road after beautiful scenic road! There is no such thing as an ugly view in South Dakota.

Custer State Park

We went "President" hunting in Rapid City (which is a really cool town!). The town is dotted with bronze statues of all the Presidents. We had to find some of our favorites!

history lesson from Thomas Jefferson!

We also had the pleasure of seeing THE CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL which has been under construction since 1948! and apparently will be under construction another 100 years the rate they are going! It was special seeing Lakota dancers perform in front of the monument. Beautiful moment!

Native song and dance

Of course people don't come to this part of the country without seeing Mount Rushmore! We went several times on our trip (free parking after the first visit!) and it was always surreal and magnificent.

After our first short visit ( We wanted to save the experience and "Do it Up Right" on 4th of July) we went to BADLANDS NATIONAL PARK!

For several hours we felt as if we were on another planet! The Badlands are sparse but teaming with life and personality. The colors, the smells, the sounds, the heat and a Wild Sheep that stopped traffic, made this park a place of pure weird wonder.

Badlands!

It was finally the 4th and time to celebrate our wonderful and crazy country! We got up early and headed back to MOUNT RUSHMORE! We of course did our Podcast Episode over the awesome and thrilling Alfred Hitchcock Movie NORTH BY NORTHWEST. The most memorable moments of the movie take place on Mount Rushmore! There was even a sign commemorating the filming of the movie.

North By Northwest!

We hiked around "The Presidents Trail" and saw the workshop of the artist responsible for Mount Rushmore. We even had breakfast in the same cafe seen in the movie (Where Eva Marie Saint shoots Cary Grant). Being there on Independence Day really connected us to the meaning of the holiday. It was the perfect place to be!

historic downtown DeadWood

We couldn't let the day end with out having some wild fun! So we cruised over to DeadWood! DeadWood was once truly a lawless town in the late 1800's. Without law comes saloons, gambling and shoot outs! DeadWood has done a great job preserving their historic downtown area. It is full of Casino's and bars! So, we had a few drinks where Wild Bill Hickock was shot (Saloon number 10) and had to gamble our money away in the Casinos. It was a blast! The perfect freedom filled 4th of July!

Of course all good things must come to an end.

The next day we headed back to Oklahoma, taking 14 hours worth of roads to get there. Hopefully we will be back, to the land that enchanted us so much, one day!
